English for Specific Purposes
Description: English for Specific Purposes (English 213) as a learner-centered approach to teaching English as a
foreign or second language meets the needs of mostly adults learners who need to learn foreign
language for use in their specific fields, such as science, technology and academic learning. this
course is recommended for Bachelor of Technical Teacher Education (BTTE) students
who wish to learn how to design ESP courses and programs in an area of specialization such as
English for Science and
Technology, and for academic purposes. in addition, they are introduced to ESP instructional
strategies, materials adaptation and development, and evaluation. In order to achieve the target
goals of this academic program, a variety of teaching and learning approaches and instructional
practices will be utilized. These include the following:
- Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). It is the engagement of the learners in communication in order to allow them to develop their communicative competence. Terms sometimes used to refer to features of CLT include process oriented, task
based, and inductive, or discovery oriented (Savignon in Celce-Murcia).
- Cooperative Learning Approach. This approach makes use og group dynamics and group investigations in learning and solving problems together. It promotes the development of skills in "democratic procedures" as they solve the problem in collaborative manner
(Salandanan, (2009).
- Reflective Teaching. It Puts premium on the ability of the teacher to guide students to "reflect" on their own experiences in order to arrive at new understandings and meanings (Salandanan,2009).
- Experiential Learning. It is essentially a way of acquiring knowledge and information or skills through direct and keen observations followed by an in-depth analysis of what has been sensed and understood (Salandanan, 2009).
- Lecture Method. It is characterize by an oral presentation of a topic by an expert, an instructor, or a resource perlecturer is regarded as an authority in special subject matter he/she is to speak on (Zulueta, 2006).
- Role Playing Approach. it is one of the dramatic ways of presenting learning episodes. This approach is action filled because it consists of an enactment by the students of ea learning
situation through which the participants depict real-life responses and behavior (Zulueta, 2006).
